How to convert Excel to CSV

  1. Open the workbook in Excel and click the sheet you want: only that sheet is saved.
  2. Widen any column showing ##### and give long IDs the Number format with 0 decimals, because Excel saves each cell as it is shown.
  3. Choose File, Save As (or Save a Copy).
  4. Pick CSV UTF-8 (Comma delimited) as the file type and click Save.
  5. If Excel warns that some features may be lost, keep the CSV format.

Or drop the file at the top of this page and skip these steps.

Questions

Is my file uploaded?

No. The file is read and converted by this page inside your browser tab. Nothing is sent to a server.

My workbook has several sheets. Which one is converted?

The first sheet that holds data. When several do, a Sheet list appears above the preview so you can pick another. Hidden sheets are left out: unhide a sheet in Excel to convert it.

What happens to formulas and dates?

A formula becomes the result Excel last saved. Dates come out as 2024-03-15, and amounts as plain numbers, so $1,234.50 becomes 1234.5.

Comma or semicolon: which should I pick?

Comma, unless the file is for Excel in much of Europe, which expects semicolons. Numbers are not changed either way. Accents open correctly in Excel with both.

Which files can it open?

Excel workbooks (.xlsx, and .xlsm, whose macros are never run) up to 50 MB. For an older .xls file or one with a password, open it in Excel and save it as Excel Workbook (.xlsx) without a password first.
