How to combine two columns in Excel

  1. Insert an empty column where the combined column should go and type its header, such as Full name.
  2. In its first data row, type =TEXTJOIN(" ",TRUE,A2,B2): your separator goes between the quotes, such as ", " or "-", and your columns go after TRUE, in order.
  3. TRUE skips empty cells, so a missing last name leaves no extra space. TEXTJOIN needs Excel 2019 or Microsoft 365; in older Excel type =A2&" "&B2, which leaves a gap when a cell is empty.
  4. Double-click the fill handle to fill the formula down the column.
  5. To keep the result once you delete the old columns, copy the new column and paste it over itself with Paste Special, Values.

Or skip the steps: drop your file in the tool above.

Questions

Is my file uploaded?

No. This page reads your file inside your browser tab, and nothing is sent to a server.

Which files does it take?

Excel workbooks (.xlsx) and CSV files up to 50 MB, with no row limit, and you download the same format back. Have an old .xls file? Open it in Excel and save it as Excel Workbook (.xlsx). The download holds the sheet you fixed, as values; other sheets, colours and formulas stay in your original file.

What if a cell is empty?

It is left out with its separator, so "Ana" and an empty last name give "Ana", with no space after it. The page counts those rows so you can check them.

Are my original columns kept?

Yes. The combined column is added as the last column, and the columns you picked stay as they were.

Can I combine more than two columns, or use my own separator?

Yes. Click Add a column for each extra column, in the order you want them. Pick Space, Comma, Dash or Nothing, or choose Other and type your own, such as " / ".
